Thrift shopping it’s fun and very sustainable but it’s a skill. And to be good at it you need to practice.

The first bunch of items I thrifted defiantly weren’t gems, let me tell you. In time I got much better and here I am sharing with you some of the best thricks I learned along the way, hoping that they will helpful for you too.

Comprare abiti di seconda mano è divertente e molto sostenibile, ma è un'abilità. E come per qualsiasi altra abilità, bisogna fare pratica prima di diventare abili.
I primi abiti di seconda mano che acquistai non furono scelte eccellenti, lasciate che ve lo dica. Col tempo sono migliorata e ora voglio condividere con voi alcuni delle migliori trucchetti che ho imparato nel tempo, sperando che si rivelino utili anche per voi.

1. Go prepared

Thrifting has a big con: it’s much more time consuming than going to a regular store. You can save a lot of time by going there with a list of things you are going to look for, plus planning your shopping in advance will help you make more thoughtful purchases and less impulse buying.

Uno degli aspetti peggiori del fare acquisti di seconda mano è che richiede molto più tempo che andare in un negozio normale. Puoi risparmiare un sacco di tempo andando lì con un elenco di cose che intendi acquistare. Pianificare in anticipo lo shopping ti aiuterà a fare spese più ponderate e meno acquisti impulsivi.

2. Dress comfortably

Avoid things such as lace shoes, heels, buttoned up shirts or bulky earrings. Basically leave home anything that could get in your way while you are trying to find that dream piece of clothing.

Evita di indossare cose come scarpe con i lacci, tacchi, camicie o orecchini ingombranti. In pratica, lascia a casa tutto ciò che potrebbe intralciarti durante la ricerca di quel capo d’abbigliamento da sogno che stai cercando.

3. Start with a boutique

If you are an aspiring thriftier but you find thrift stores a bit overwhelming I get you, I have been there. Thrift stores are often huge and there you can find a huge variety of styles, colors and patterns. And that can be good, but maybe a bit intimidating if you have never gone thrifting in your life. That’s why I suggest you to go thrifting for the first time in a boutique. They are more expensive for sure, but they also have a more defined style, higher standards and often an overall more pleasant shopping experience.

Se sei un aspirante thriftier, ma trovi i grandi negozi dell’usato un po' troppo dispersivi, ti capisco perfettamente. I negozi dell' usato sono spesso grandi e vi puoi trovare una grande varietà di stili, colori e modelli. E questo può essere positivo, ma forse potrebbe intimidirti un po’ se non hai mai fatto acquisti di seconda mano. Ecco perché ti suggerisco di cominciare con una boutique. Lì i capi sono sicuramente più costosi, ma hanno anche uno stile più definito, standard più elevati e spesso offrono un'esperienza di shopping più piacevole.

4. Try everything on

Sizes aren’t that reliable in a thrift store. There you may find vintage, handmade pieces and with them it’s really hard to tell whether they fit or not by just looking at them. Also all or at least most the clothes in a thrift stores have been worn and washed multiple times and that may also affect their fit. That why you should take your time and try on every piece that sparks your interest, even if it isn’t technically your size.

Le taglie non sono così affidabili nei negozio dell'usato. Lì puoi trovare pezzi vintage e fatti a mano e con loro è davvero difficile dire se ti calzino o meno semplicemente guardandoli. Inoltre, tutti o almeno la maggior parte dei vestiti in un negozio dell'usato sono stati indossati e lavati più volte e ciò potrebbe influire sulla loro vestibilità. Ecco perché dovresti prenderti il tuo tempo e provare ogni pezzo che susciti in te interesse, anche se non è tecnicamente nella tua taglia.

5. Check the clothes for signs of wear

Look out for stains, rips and discolorations especially in the armpits area. Also, don't forget to check if there are any buttons missing and whether or not the zippers work.

Controllare i vestiti per i segni di usura
Cerca macchie, strappi e scolorimenti, specialmente nell'area delle ascelle. Inoltre, non dimenticare di controllare se ci sono dei bottoni mancanti e se le cerniere funzionano o meno.

6. Avoid the low quality items

One may be tempted to buy a €2 top just because of the price tag, am I right? Especially since you would be getting something really cheap, but at the same time you wouldn’t be supporting any fast fashion brand. Still, those items of clothing are very poorly done, and they won’t last as long as better quality items. If you can afford to pay a few extra bucks, I highly encourage you to invest in higher quality pieces.

Si potrebbe essere tentati di comprare un top di € 2 solo per il prezzo, giusto? Soprattutto perché avresti trovato qualcosa di veramente economico, ma allo stesso tempo non avresti supportato alcun marchio di Fast Fashion. Tuttavia, quei capi d’ abbigliamento sono fatti molto male e non dureranno quanto abiti di qualità superiore. Se puoi permetterti di pagare qualche soldo in più, ti incoraggio vivamente a investire in pezzi di buona fattura.

7. Take it to the tailor or fix it yourself

Every item you find in a thrift store is in a way one of a kind, in the sense that most likely you won’t find that item anymore if you don’t buy it the first time you see it, and that goes especially for vintage clothing. So if you really like a beautiful yet imperfect item you may think of fixing it yourself, if you know how to sew, or you can take it to the tailor. Small alterations aren’t usually that expensive and if you got a good quality item for cheap it may be worth it.

Ogni pezzo che trovi in un negozio dell'usato è in un qualche modo unico nel suo genere, nel senso che molto probabilmente non lo troverai mai più, se non lo compri la prima volta che lo vedi, e questo vale soprattutto per i capi vintage. Quindi, se ti piace davvero un capo d’abbigliamento bello ma imperfetto, potresti pensare di aggiustarlo da solo, se sei in grado di cucire, o puoi portarlo dal* sart*. Piccole alterazioni di solito non sono molto costose e se hai un articolo di buona qualità a basso costo, potrebbe valerne la pena.

8. Look in every section

This goes even for regular stores in my opinion, because clothes don’t have gender. You may find great pieces that make you feel comfortable and confident in (because that’s the most important thing) in any section of the store.

Questo vale anche per i negozi normali a mio parere, perché i vestiti non hanno genere. Potresti trovare pezzi fantastici che ti fanno sentire a tuo agio e sicur* di te (perché questa è la cosa più importante) in qualsiasi sezione del negozio.

9. Don’t give up too soon

As I said earlier thrifting is a skill. Think as if you wanted to learn to play the piano. Most likely a couple of lessons won’t be enough to play your favorite song perfectly. Same goes for thrifting, finding those dream pieces will take a while. Thrift stores, unlike regular stores, get new stuff all the time so make you sure to go there as often as you can when you are on a hunt for something.

Come ho detto prima, fare acquisti di seconda mano è un'abilità. Immagina di voler imparare a suonare il piano. Molto probabilmente un paio di lezioni non saranno sufficienti per suonare alla perfezione la tua canzone preferita. Lo stesso vale per gli acquisti di seconda mano, trovare quei pezzi da sogno richiederà un po'. I negozi dell'usato, a differenza dei negozi normali, acquistano sempre capi nuovi, quindi assicurati di andarci il più spesso possibile quando sei alla ricerca di qualcosa.

10. Try new styles

The thrift store is the best place to make brave fashion choices. Since buying second hand is both cheap and eco-friendly you can dare to buy things you wouldn’t buy at a regular store. As always ask yourself how many times you could actually wear what you are buying. Because mixing things up is cool, but you don’t want to end up having a lot of clothes in your closet that you never wear.

Il negozio dell'usato è il posto migliore per fare scelte coraggiose in fatto di moda. Dal momento che acquistare la seconda mano è sia economico che ecologico, puoi osare di più e comprare anche cose che non compreresti in un negozio normale. Come sempre chiediti quante volte potresti effettivamente indossare ciò che stai acquistando. Perché variare è bello, ma non vuoi finire con un sacco di vestiti nel tuo armadio che non indossi mai.
